OpenOffice can read & write Word documents, except those saved in the
new .DOCX format. You can save documents in older formats with
Microsoft Office 2007, which OpenOffice can work with. Another thing
you can do, if you want to read or cut & paste from the .DOCX files, is
to download and install the free Word Viewer can compatibility pack from
Microsoft.

After installing the Word Viewer, you'll find the file associations for
Word documents have been changed to the viewer. You can change them
back to OpenOffice, by following these directions.
Changing file associations
Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and
choose the desired application.
