I haven't yet taken any edition of 2.4rc for a spin , so I am not in a
position to comment. However, what you describe holds true for the
"Insert -> Picture -> From File..." in 2.3.0.1.3 openSUSE edition and
IMNSHO should be the way things should by default function for Windows
users.

Odd? I can successfully copy from Gimp and paste into both Writer and
Impress with no links, but only if the image remains open in  Gimp.
Handling clipboard functions is a much more complex operation under
Linux and I think the OOo developers may have developed some hybrid
solutions outside of the system clipboard functions.
