One way that can happen is when copying from inside your browser, and this is probably what is leading to the OP's confusion with missing links. With Firefox, if you right click on an image and select 'Copy Image', the image itself is placed on the clipboard. However, if you select a block of text that has an image inside of that block of text, only a link to the image location is copied to the clipboard.
