| At my workplace, I only have access to MS Office 2007. Our sessional | staff are not issued PCs, and use their machines at home. Some | choose to use OpenOffice. | | My question is Will OpenOffice support .docx and .xlsx file types? | | Many thanks, Terry There are many people getting caught in this Microsoft "lock-in" trap. One possibility is to install the Sun OpenDocument plugin for MS Office: http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin on your workplace computers. This will allow you to open and save files in the international standard OpenDocument (ODF, ISO/IEC 26300) format, which OOo (OpenOffice.org) uses by default. The "official" edition of OOo (OpenOffice.org) does not yet open files in MS OOXML (Office Open Extensible Markup Language) format. As a temporary (or permanent) option, you might consider providing your staff with a copy of the enhanced version of OOo called "Oxygen Office Professional". This is still OOo, but this edition includes a number of extras and enhancements, one of them being the ability to open MS Office 2007 ".docx, .xlsx" files. The conversion is not 100% perfect, but then neither is Microsoft's own Compatibility Pack for earlier versions of MS Office [1]. Oxygen Office Professional can be downloaded from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ooop It is a fairly large download (approx. twice the size of the "official" edition) and you will need to completely uninstall any current version of OOo before you install Oxygen Office Professional.
