At the moment, most versions of OpenOffice do not support the new Microsoft Office 2007 file formats. You'll have to save in the older .DOC and .XLS formats. Another possibility, is to install the SUN ODF plug-in, which will enable Microsoft Office to read & save ODF files, which are the default in OpenOffice.
