For mail readers that only thread by subject, those messages weren't going to thread properly anyway - the original posts are all going to be lumped into a single thread. It would also be the case that adding a "Re:" would cause the mail reader to treat the reply as a new thread. Even more so if somebody replied with "Re: [users]" and somebody else replied with "[users] Re:" (I've seen both used here.)! In any case, there's no loss in threadability due to the change in subject if there are multiple topics bearing the same subject line. At least threadability will be improved once the topic has a distinct subject line.
