Ah - well, Sun Report Builder is an extension for the package and is
available at http://extensions.services.openoffice.org from the main
page select By Application and Base. You will find it there.
The only possibility that I can think of is that my computer is Gutsy
x86_64. I have not experienced any problems with Java myself, but I
have read of x86_64 users who have had issues. I do have Blackdown
1.4.2, Sun 1.5 and Sun 1.6 installed. In Tools > Options I found that
OOo was set to use Sun 1.5, so I changed it to Sun 1.6 and restarted
OOo, but still no joy.
Wonder what went wrong.
Double Ah Ha - well, I run Kubuntu 7.1 64bit - along with Win XP and
32bit Kubuntu on a separate machine.
Do you run the OOo that comes with Gutsy or do you run Vanilla OOo and
if the later are you installing 64bit binaries? ( we might of had this
conversation once, sorry if we did )
Actually before you answer - let me tell you what my experience with
this has been:
If I run the distro version of OOo then I must run the distro supplied
version of Report Builder ( you will find it with adept ) - if I run
64bit vanilla OOo then I must run a binary of the report builder
extension that was built with the same environment as that used to
produce the OOo binaries. The distro supplied report builder will not
work, nor does the the binary distributed at the extension site. ( the
version of report builder from the extension site runs fine with vanilla
OOo under 32bit Kubuntu )
CAVEAT I haven't tried mixing these, as described, since the initial
release of the extension but when I did it was pretty much the same
thing as you are describing. ( I suppose things have changed enough with
the releases that this might also have changed )
I have never put a 32bit version of OOo on the 64bit OS nor do I plan
to do so, and therefore have no idea about how the 'official' extension
release functions in that situation. Maybe there is someone else on the
list that can say.
I can tell you that there are problems with the 64bit version of Base
that just don't show up with the 32bit versions. I can't say that it is
common, but for example: The other night I tested a few dozen issues,
all dealing with Report Builder, and used Kubuntu 64bit and the vanilla
64bit OOo 2.4 m_11 build ( which is the 2.4 RC5 package ) and in a
handful of cases the behavior was different from the same releases under
XP or 32bit Kubuntu. ( some of the features worked only partially and
one or two just failed )
By and large however with 64bit vanilla OOo and SUN Java and the correct
binary for report builder things have been working pretty well under
version 2.3.1 and seem to be even better under 2.4. I also found that
the latest distro version of OOo and the distro version of report
builder worked reasonably well, with the SUN version of java again. Not
sure if gnome vs kde would factor into this equation, but I tend to
doubt it would.
I kind of got rambling there - time to stop.
Bottom line if you are running 32bit OOo and the extension did not
function after install...not sure what to tell you - maybe a simple
reboot would help..how is that for being less then helpful. Sorry.
