[users] opening Microsoft Documents

I lost some tax info. because my MIcrosoft Works was a trial version and I was 
unaware!!! I was directed to Office Org. by a dell Rep. I have downloade 
version 2.3.1 but cannot open my Works documents. Is it possible to open them 
with Open Office?
