Most versions of OpenOffice can't handle those files. What you can do,
is install the free Microsoft Word & Excel viewers & Compatibility Pack,
which can read Works documents. Installing those viewers will make them
the default application for Microsoft Office document types, so you will
have to reset the file associations back to OpenOffice.

Changing file associations
Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and
choose the desired application.
