I wish life were so simple - depending on explorer settings, icons 
can be automatically hidden and may not be immediately obvious. At 
the very least, the OP needs to click on the "show hidden icons" icon 
- if you see what I mean.  (And if explorer has been restarted for 
any reason, the icon may quite simply not be present at all.)

Or ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager, check the Processes tab 
and make sure soffice.bin and soffice.exe aren't running.
