Hi I am using openoffice version 2.3.1. I have recently updated to this version and previously my document (a book manuscript) was numbered fine under this version. Now I find the page numbering formatting has gone completely wrong. I looked up help and followed the example of using headers and footers and putting the number in the field, but it gives me no other options than 'default' ...

Those options are the page styles that you are using in your document. Clearly you are using just the Default page style. That's no problem.

and I can't alter the weird numbering which only goes up to 6 and then repeats from 1 - 6 again.

I'm guessing here, but the only way I think this can happen is that you have a manual page break between pages six and seven (alias "one" again) and that you have set the page numbering to start again from this point. The page break, if it is there, is betrayed by a barely perceptible dark blue line at the top of the new page - page seven (also called "one") in your case. Er, I don't suppose this document is about King James the Sixth and First, is it? ;^)

Here's how to resolve the problem if this is the case:
o Put the cursor at the very top of page seven (alias one the second).
o Press Backspace. This removes the manual page break, of course.
o If you need the page break, insert it again using Insert | Manual Break... | Page break. This time, either leave Style set as "[None]" or select Default, but do not tick the "Change page number" box.

If I click the default option on, the strange numbering is there, if I switch it off it disappears.

That's how I understand switches to work.

... I really don't have the time to mess around with this. It all seems very complicated for me.

If this has been of help, I trust you will see it as useful learning and not as "messing around". Sadly, all useful systems probably need to be complicated. I hope that this is a case of "It's easy when you know how."

I trust this helps.
