I've just tried the above and it does work as the OP suggested. After
putting 'numbering' in the first column, I could insert and delete rows and
have the numbering updated automatically.

The one annoying thing however is that when you are on the last row and tab
to create a new row, the numbering is done correctly in the first column,
however if you then tab off the first column, the numbering indents and gets
confused as opposed to moving to the next column.

However I'm currently using the Dev version of 3.0 so it may be fixed in
that release.
