There's a well known bug in Windows which messes up the registry in such
a way as to produce exactly the symptoms you describe. Microsoft has a
free fix for it at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Then I think you did it wrong. Did you follow the instructions in the
link I sent you? If you did it will have completely uninstalled your old
2.3 version and there wouldn't have been anything to point at.
