On Windows you don't need to tell OO. Instead, it will use whatever is
registered as the "default mail program" without further intervention. When
youminstall TB it asks if it should become the default mail program ...

There is one problem with Windows with Default Email Packages
EVERY time there is a windows update, I have to go to internet options
and change BACK to my default email package. It seems that MS
has a little routine that runs and resets Outlook as the default email
whenever the windows updates are installed.

Hmmm. I use Win XP Pro and have Thunderbird as my default mail client and Firefox as my default browser. I religiously apply all the Windows updates but have *never* had to reset those defaults. Perhaps because you use Internet Explorer ?????

IE is used only when the stupid programs are told to open it
directly insteal of the default browser. I hate those type of
programs. MS must have a deal with them. . . . .

I use FireFox, since it came out, and Netscape before that.
I even looked into Opera once every year or so to see how
it has changed. But I always keep FireFox as my default
browser.

Look into <control panel><internet properties><programs>
That is where the changes are taking place.

HTML editor: OpenOffice.org 2.3
E-mail: Outlook Express ( this is where the changes happen)
Newsgroups: Outlook Express
Internet Call: NetMeeting (I had uninstalled this but it is still here)
Calendar: Microsoft Office Outlook
Contact List: Microsoft Office Outlook

My default browser has been Firefox for years.

When I click on the E-mail icon on the desktop,
it opens up the program listed in the E-mail "box"
Don't know if you're satisfied with the answers so far, but if you want to avoid having MS reset your default email program to Outlook Express, just uninstall it. While you're at it, it might be a good time to uninstall MS Messenger. Both programs are quite notorious as gateways for malware.

HTH,
Matt
