As a follow-up, Openoffice provides detailed instructions for installing X11 on a Mac. http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/support.html It seems you need the Mac DVD for Tiger. I'm surprise you didn't ask for it when you bought your 2nd hand machine. You'll need to borrow it from someone I guess. It's a Mac problem not an Openoffice problem.
