There are a few different ways. The best solution is for him to install OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org. Failing that, he can install the SUN ODF plugin, which will enable ODF support in Microsoft Office.

Or, if he doesn't want to install anything, you'll have to save in Word format. Also, ensure automatic file name extension is selected.
