Well, old dinosaur, I presume you are using a Windows operating system (XP, Vista, or perhaps something more ancient, befitting your antediluvian nature). When you mouse over that OpenOffice icon on your desktop, you should see the individual programmes (Writer, Calc, Impress, etc) contained in the OOo package. Double-click on the one you want to use, and it should load. If you're like me, the one you use most will be Writer ; you might, in that case, want to consider right-clicking the icon and then sending it to the desktop, which will create a shortcut that you can double-click directly to load the word processor....
