I can't see any ruler, vertical or otherwise in Calc (WinXP OOo2.4)
If you type in rulers in the help it appears to talk about them but I
think the help is mixed up and it is referring to Presentations.

It is not clear whether he wants a vertical or horizontal ruler.
I have both enabled in writer, and the _vertical_ ruler appears in a
Calc document, but not the horizontal. I haven't played with turning
it off - using OOo 2.4 on linux.

Neil, you are quite right, I just tried with a new spreadsheet, and no
rulers. I think I must have had a writer file open behind the one I
looked at before, so it looked as though there was a vertical ruler.
I don't need new glasses, just to _see_ through the ones I have.
WRT horizontal formatting, "Format-Column" allows setting of
size/spacing which may meet the needs of the OP better than having a
ruler as such.
I'll crawl back into my hole now.
