What sort of "wierd problems"? It's also helpful if you let us know what version of OOo & Operating System... I cannot recreate on OOo 2.4.0 (linux). I used an .ods that originally used "zip" (postal code - zip code in US) in the column header and changed it to P.C. I then opened a new mailmerge and pointed to the .ods as the source & identified "P.C" as the Zip field.
