Since they're apparently important financial records, then they are 
backed up in case of situations like this, right?  Restore them from 
your backup/archive.

If you're not backing up, it's time to learn.  Ghost or True Image make 
it real easy to do.  Just Winzip can do it too.  Many ways including 
plain old copy commands.

No idea what went wrong on you though.
