When I tried it on my computer that doesn't have Open Office it was able to
open as a Google doc but not in MS.

There are a couple of options, including:
1. Have the person you're sending the attachment to install OpenOffice
(free).
2. You save the file as an MS document (File > Save As).
3. Send the document as a PDF file. (File > Send > E-mail as PDF)
