When I tried it on my computer that doesn't have Open Office it was able to
open as a Google doc but not in MS.

Click on File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word.
You can also save as a Word file, by selecting Word from the drop down
list. Also, ensure automatic file name extension is selected.
