Since 2.4 you can easily assign language to text with the help of status bar control (left to zoom indicator) - see http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=1034.

Since 3.0 Writer will be able to assign language based on keyboard layout - see http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=1035.

I am using version 2.4.0 of OpenOffice.org. My problem is :
I find the use of the spell-checking feature of Writer very cumbersome to use when I try to correct texts in Italian or Spanish. Writer usually misidentifies the language as Romanian, or something else.

Why can't I simply predetermine the language I am trying to write in?

If your document is monoglot, go to Tools>Options>Language Settings>Languages and choose the language you want from the drop down list. You can set the language "for all documents" or "for this document only". The "for all documents" setting is "remembered" within OOo's configuration files; the "for this document only" is "remembered" within the document.

If your document is polyglot you can either set the language for a piece of text as Mr. Palagin describes above or, especially if you plan to write a lot of polyglot documents, you can pre-create a set of "styles" for each language which you can save as a polyglot "template". The procedure is a bit long to describe here - even though it's very simple. Please read up about "styles" and "templates" in the documentation based at <http://documentation.openoffice.org/>. Note that Language is an attribute set within Character styles. Having done this you just choose the "style" you want for each word, phrase, sentence, paragraph or whatever.

In either case you need to have installed *all* the dictionaries you need. At Tools>Options>Language Settings>Languages is the list of possible languages. A dictionary for a particular language is only installed if its name in this list has a little blue "abc" and a tick (check mark) next to it. To install new dictionaries go to File>Wizards>Install New Dictionaries and choose the ones you want. Note that some languages have only spelling dictionaries whereas others may also have a hyphenation dictionary and/or a thesaurus.
