Hi, XP Pro, OOo 2.4 I'm hoping for a response from one of the authors or gurus here.
Will version 3.0 of OO.o repair the image positioning problems for large documents and especially for Master Document Mode? Details/History: There was a problem in version 2.3 where with large documents greater than around ten Meg, images, especially in tables, would begin rearranging themselves and even jumping out of the table cells and fully or partially covering each other. I did a bunch of research, couldn't find a similar issue, so I submitted one of my own which was then deemed to be "already reported", so I was semi-comfortable that it would be worked on. Version 2.4 came along, and the problems for whatever reason seemed to be much fewer and images much better behaved, even though I couldn't see a fix for it in the changes docs. That was great, so I moved on to creating Master Documents. The first one I created, for testing, seemed great, and I like the way OOo manages Master Documents. Then last night I spend the evening learning, probing around, playing with the various features, and getting my head around it for actual use. I created the first five chapters, converting them from Word's .doc format to OOo's .odt format and touching up a few areas where the images jumped around a bit, but nothing very messy. Then I created a Master Document (.odm I think it is), wrote a Cover Page for the document, and started adding subdocuments, one at a time. First chapter went fine. Second chapter same, and that one had a few graphic images. Third chapter subdocument had quite a few graphics, and turned into trash in the Master Document. Assuming I'd forgotten or missed fixing a couple things, I deleted it as a subdocument and repoened the Chapter's .odt, and all was fine there. Images were in proper positions, nothing over the edge of any margins, all properly placed and aligned, a few in tables where there were more then two images shown together. I hit space-delete to force a Save, Saved it, closed it, went back to the Master Document and reinserted it as a subdocument. And it was the same trashed mess as before. Totally unacceptable; not even close to being useful for printing in any way. I noticed two images missing, so I'm assuming they are simply completely covered by other images. Now, you can not edit anything in the Master Document that is in a subdocument, so ... since the subdocument is OK and aligned properly when opened on its own, WHY is image alignment ruined when it is inserted into the Master Document? There just isn't any workaround that I can imagine. Master Document is mostly all defaulted with the exception of ticking to add a page before Heading 1, so each chapter is preceded by a blank page. I removed that tick, deleted the subdocument and reinsterted it, but the results were exactly the same. So the $64 question is: -- Will version 3.0 have had anthing done that might help with this Master Document problem? -- IS there a workaround or anything I could do to make it work? -- If not, any guess which version might affect it? Thanks for reading; I know this was lengthy. Happy to answer any questions if there are any.
