An even easier method to create desktop shortcuts in Windows is to browse to the folder where the program is located, highlight the program with the mouse, then drag it to the desktop while holding down the Alt key. I'm not sure that's easier... many Windows users don't have a clue how
to browse to where the program is located. But nearly all know about the
Start|Program menu.
There are another couple of possibilities, both using a right-click drag from the Start > Programs menu. Dragging an individual component's entry to the desktop and choosing Copy creates a shortcut for that component, while doing the same with the OOo folder's entry creates a folder on the desktop with icons for all the components (plus one for desktop.ini, which can be deleted). The second method is similar to having the Quickstarter, but without the time savings on first use after restart and also without the side effects of having Quickstarter running and inhibiting some changes. It can be a bit tricky to pick up the right folder, but it's quicker than creating the desktop folder and getting each of the component icons into it. (I prefer the folder to cluttering the desktop with all the icons.) Actually, creating that folder is what I'd like to see the new installation process do, as an option.
