That is because most mailing lists encourage, and some demand, bottom or inline posting. For personal email, where answers to questions come _after_ the question chronologically, top posting is fine. For the people who deal with mailing lists all day, this is a very important issue. I am active in over 40 mailing lists. Your 'little quirk' multiplied by 40 makes for a big waste of my time.
