I was wondering if there are any compatibility issues between open source
software, such as yours, and portable harddrives? Thanks.

Open source software is no different from any other software in this
regard.
There are now some (hopefully a very few) external hard drives available in
this country that are pre-set so that they are quite difficult to use fully
with Linux. :-(
Pre-set? How? Current Linux distributions can read and write most, if
not all, hard drive partition formats including Microsoft's NTFS.
I have never seen a portable hard drive or USB drive that could not be
easily mounted in Linux, and used by OpenOffice.org. This is not to say
such drives don't exist, but I have yet to see one that will not work
with Linux and OpenOffice.org.
