OK, here's what you can do to reproduce my stupidity.

Open a new Impress document and create at least one slide. Do Insert >
Movie and Sound > and select an mpg file. This will place the video on
the slide and the first frame will appear, as though it were a photo.
This is the point where I was stuck. I couldn't find any buttons to
make it play.

Then I selected the "photo" and, lo and behold, a toolbar popped up in
the bottom of the program window. I clicked on the > and off it went. I
had selected it various times before but I was expecting an > to appear
on the slide or on top of the "photo." I was too blind to look at the
bottom of the window. In my defense it was late at night and I was
tired.
