The instruction at:

anual/Writer_Guide/Working_with_list_(numbering)_styles

SAYS -
"To apply the different levels of a list-numbered paragraph style:

   1. Type the first paragraph and apply the List 1 style. Notice that
the level-1 list number is added automatically. "

For me, that does not happen. I can apply any of the List styles, and nothing at all happens to the
paragraph UNTIL I go up to the /d/u/m/m/y/ ... er... tool bar and click
"Numbering On/Off"

I'd love it if the styles would just apply themselves when they are
applied. How do I get that to work?

I just typed a short paragraph. Then I pressed F11 to select the list style column and double-clicked on “Numbering 1”. The string “1. ” was appended to the front of the paragraph. And every time I put my cursor in that paragraph the style “Numbering 1” is highlighted in the style palette.

I’ve tried it again in other variations, but it always seems to work.

You mentioned the Tool bar. Might you be attempting to add numbering by a different method than using the List styles. If not, then please advise what version of OpenOffice and what operating system you are using and what combination of list styles and toolbar you are working with.

(There are are three different ways of numbering paragraphs in OpenOffice.org Writer, by manual fixing, via the toolbar, and via styles. Attempting to mix these methods often causes problems.)
