Why does the interface ALLOW me to set the Numbering Style of a

Well, the Confuse Kevin Conspiracy Nuts will probably answer this too,
but...
I think maybe (hopefully!) you're getting confused between two different
types of styles in OOo. To get a list working effectively, you need two
different types of style:
- a list style, which basically consists of bullet/numbering information
(view list styles by clicking on the button on the very right-hand side
at the top of the Styles and Formatting window)
- a paragraph style, linked to the list style in its Numbering tab.
... so you can have a paragraph style named 'List 1' and a list style
named 'List 1' and these are completely different entities.
To set up a list correctly, you'll usually need to edit both of them.
