Hi! I am a new user and I sent my prof my midterm and he can't open it! Is there something he can download or what kind of converter does he need to be able to download my documents? Or do I need to save it differently? Thanks in advance!

Alice,

Your prof probably uses MS Word, which refuses to support the OpenOffice format.

There are several possibilities:

1. You can save the document (I'm assuming this is a text document, as opposed to a spreadsheet) in MS Word format (choose File > Save As, and select the proper file format).

2. If your prof only needs to read it, and not do any editing, you can export it as a pdf file. This has the advantage of ensuring that no formatting is lost; your prof will see it exactly as you see it. (When saving it as an MS Word file, if it's a complex document, some formatting might not come through perfectly).

3. Your prof can install OpenOffice. While this might be the most perfect solution, it also might be asking a lot of him/her, just to read one student's paper.

Depending on the prof, he might actually appreciate it. Many people are not aware of alternatives to Microsoft and are happy to use them when they find some.
