But going through Format > Styles and formatting > Page style > New style from selection, the Columns menu there doesn't have that option. And the text on the new page isn't behaving that way -- it's exactly as if the first column is somehow being partitioned into two new columns. I added the new page by using a Insert > Manual break > Page break below a table in the preceding page; at a wild guess it's almost as though the table is being carried over to the first column of the new page...
