I have mac OS X 10.5
It came with X11 pre-installed.
I downloaded OO 2.4 this afternoon
I opened the openoffice.org icon that showed up on my desktop.
Then I dragged the OO icon onto the provided Applications shortcut.
From Applications I tried to open it. Nothing, except the swirly pie thing and then nothing except it shows to be in use but I can't use, can't even find any of its applications.
So I tried to open it from my Dock. Same deal.

What am I missing? I've already tried to download OO twice today. If I need to uninstall it and try again, do I do more than drag the icon from Applications to the trash? And I would leave X11 alone in the Utilities?

All I really want is a Word-like word processor for free that is compatible with Word.

Sigh. This is becoming a most Frequently Asked Question. Leopard includes a different, 'cutting edge', version of X11 compared to what Apple offered with previous iterations of OS X. It is so cutting edge, in fact, that many people consider it broken. OpenOffice has a beta version [3.0] that doesn't need X11, and will use all hotkeys, etc. all similar to what you are used to on the Mac. If you don't want to use beta software, then your current options are: 1) get another software that doesn't need X11 - it's called NeoOffice; or 2) get an improved version of X11.

For (1), keep in mind that NeoOffice is its own project and we don't support it. For (2), make sure your system is updated; you should have OS version 10.5.2 then get the X11 2.2.1 package from here: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.2.1 .

I'd also like to offer a big thumbs up to whomever changed the mailing list headers recently. This is the first time i've noticed the Original Poster getting added to the "Reply-To" field, and it really works as i expect it to now!

It's cheaper to drag the Joneses down to your level.
