I can print from Calc spreadsheet, but I can't seem to find a way of defining the print range for just the chart which will then appear in Print Preview, and then print as just that chart on a single page.

There are probably various ways of doing this, but the simplest may be:
o Click on the chart to select it (so as to produce the green handles).
o Edit | Copy (or right-click | Copy or Ctrl+C).
o Click on the tab at the bottom to select and display a new sheet.
o Edit | Paste (or right-click | Paste or Ctrl+V).
o Go to Tools | Options... | OpenOffice.org Calc | Print | Sheets and tick "Print only selected sheets".
o With the chart sheet selected, print the document.

Alternatively, you can make the choice to print only selected sheets on the fly in the print dialogue.

This solution doesn't quite fit your needs, since Page Preview shows all pages, not just those that will print. (Perhaps that's why it is called "Page Preview" and not "Print Preview", in fact.) But once you understand that, it will probably suffice.

I also note that when I was successful, I was using the former version (one immediately before 2.4).

I don't think that 2.4 is your problem. But I could find you a source for 2.3 if you really needed it.

I trust this helps.
