No, not exclusively - that is what Microsoft would like you to believe. Hence
their attempt to hijack the name. See:
I doubt the the wiki article mentions the word hijacked.
The name SQL Server, two words both capitalized, was used by Sybase first.
They formed a working alliance with Microsoft and Ashton-Tate to jointly
develop and market the product line.
Each marketed a version of the "SQL Server" for a while.
A-T dropped out early on.
The agreement between Sybase and Microsoft ended with both retaining the
right to use the name.
They both sold products called "SQL Server" for a while.
Sybase finally changed the name of their product as a way of
differentiating the products in the market.
Microsoft kept using it.
There is absolutely no reason to frame the naming of their product as a
pejorative.
I could also construct two sentences of:
I wanted to use a RDBMS but could not find a server that use SQL
anywhere on their network.
and
Do you have SQL Anywhere on your network?
The first sentence was speaking generally - the latter about a specific
product.
