Thanks; you're the only taker on this one so far. Unfortunately the file and the errors are gone so there's nothing to play with. IFF there was a read-only status set (I never thought to check it), it got set while the file was 'in use'. This occurred after having already done several interim "saves" as I worked on the file, also intermittantly. I really think it was something else, though I wish I'd thought of Save As, darn it. There's always the possibility it had to do with something glitching in Windows XP too I suppose; not exactly what you'd call unheard of. I'm not even sure what I was looking for in responses; just anything that might be an idea, I guess. There was a windows update just before that happened but I don't think that was it either. I've also moved on to 2.4.1 since then. FWIW, I AM determined to stick with OOo, so ... I mucked up a cheap & dirty batch file to back up the .ods file for me every two hours to Excel and to my external drive as a native .ods, so I can keep on using Calc. So far so good with Writer, now I have Calc in process, then Base and I should have a good handle on things. Then it's time to go see if Linux can be worked out yet. Driver issues always get me when I try to switch to Linux. Well, that and the thickness of my skull!
