Casual and non-developer types aren't going to notice a thing.  It's 
actually, IMO, just a PR move on MS's part to try to pacify the loudest 
mouths without actually giving anything up.  Being apprehensive is 
exactly what MS wants you to be:  So that you'll remain under their 
single-sourced, only game in town, forced upgrades and forced obsoletion 
at their whim.  OOo won't have such problems for a long time, if ever, 
so meanwhile, enjoy it and let your grandkids worry about it when/if it 
happens.
