Just after I emailed, Software Update notified a new X11. So I have
made some progress, thanks.

Perhaps nothing. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console and look
for error messages from X11 or Open Office. Oh, and it wouldn't
hurt if you told us what versions of OS X and X11 are involved.
