I am trying to get OO 2.4 to run on my 10.5.4 system.

In the past, I used 2.0 and 2.2 on a 10.4.{4-11} system, and it worked fine.

I have upgrade my system to 10.5
I have installed the X11 upgrade from the optional installs.

I have used software update check, and it tells me that I have the
latest version.

Why it grabs X11 from /usr/X11/X11.app instead of
/Applications/Utilities? I don't know. It looks like the version in
Utilities is just a stub.

Help? Please?

I'll do my best. 1st off, here's the background: Tiger and earlier versions of OS X used the trusty/rusty X11R6. For Leopard, Apple made the switch to cutting edge X11R7. This is new enough to still show us some bugs. There are also some deliberate changes in implementation that were made by Apple. For all the gory details, see: http://homepage.mac.com/sao1/X11/index.html , in particular the section about launchd. Apple is also somewhat reluctant to provide community updates to the X server in their Software Update channel - here on the list we suggest that all Leopard users grab the latest version from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/Releases and install that on top of their existing X11 installation.

Before you do that, though, it would be nice if you could provide us with the version string of X11 in 10.5.4... I have chosen to remain with Tiger until this gets ironed out, and don't have access to a Leopard system to check this.

In summary, try the 2.2.3 Xquartz package mentioned above and see if you still have problems starting OpenOffice. If so, your options probably amount to this:

1) Power Users could revert to the Tiger version of X11 - this is not for the faint of heart.
2) Use the 3.0 beta version of OpenOffice - no X11 required.
3) Use NeoOffice until the 3.0 version of OpenOffice becomes a production release.
