I first considered it a M$-Office bug, but it happens also on .doc documents written with OOO. I also installed OOO 3.0 beta, but the behaviour did not change.
The "modified / date" field always changes to "modified / author".

I cannot reproduce your problem. I am using OOo 2.4.0 on Win XP pro/SP2. I created a new text document (Writer). I did Insert>Field>Author followed, two lines down, by Insert>Field>Date.

That's because you are not doing what I believe the questioner means.

In Writer, go to Insert | Fields > | Other... | DocInformation. Under Type, choose Modified and under Select choose Date. The field correctly shows the file's modification date. Save this as .odt and reopen and all is well. Save it as .doc and open that in Microsoft's Word Viewer and all is still well. (I'm guessing that this would also open correctly in Word itself.) Open the (unchanged) .doc file again in Writer and the Modified/Date field has become a Modified/Author field instead - and stays that way if saved again. So, yes: I can confirm the problem. (This is with my 2.4.1 for Windows XP.)

I trust this helps.
