Yes: you can adjust the x-axis scaling if you choose "XY (Scatter)"
instead of "Line" for the Chart Type. You can still create a line graph
with or without points.

Thanks. With some fiddling around I solved the problem with the line
chart. But I can't make vertical grid lines appear. In Format > Grid >
only the Y Axis Major Grid... is selectable.
An a 2nd problem, similar to the original problem but with a "stock"
chart: In the Data Ranges > Data Series > Data ranges, I have specified
High Values and Low Values, while in the Categories area there are the A
column date values, and the bars in the chart appear OK. Again, how can
I make the X axis dates appear every 30 days? Again in Format > Axis >
X-Axis > Scale all the top fields and their Automatic checkboxes are
grayed out.
