The problem with the "Master Document" approach is that the page numbering/chapter numbering and references don't show in each separate file... only when you open the "master" one.
The manual ( http://oooauthors.org/en/authors/userguide2/writer/published_final/0213WG-WorkingWithMasterDocuments.pdf) say it like this: "Within the master document, navigate to the page of the subdocument on which you inserted the cross-reference field. You should now see the text of the cross-reference appear in the spot where you inserted it (Figure 15), because within the master document, the subdocument can find the target of that field reference." Even with my solution (Using sections and hide some of them as pleased) it's not perfect... I also had to fix the page numbers each time, because it get's reseted when you change the shown section. Also, you must be careful not to update the references before saving the file, because when you do it, all the references get lost. It would be very helpful if openoffice (writer, at least) had a way to set an option to "KEEP ALL VARIABLE FIELDS FIXED" or some thing, that let's you handle as if all they where entered manually. Or a way to "CONVERT ALL VARIABLE FIELDS TO SIMPLE TEXT". Anyway, I don't know if there is enough people who needs it.
