I am working on a long document originally created with WP. Among other things, I want to change the default font (the document contains other fonts too). In WP I would change it in the very first code of the Reveal Codes. How can I do it in OOWriter?

   * Go to Format>Styles and Formatting (or press F11) to bring up the
     Styles and Formatting panel.
   * Click on the leftmost icon at the top, which represents paragraph
     styles - you'll see that if you hover the mouse over the icon.
     This will bring up the list of available paragraph styles.
   * Right click on the style named "Default"
   * Click Modify
   * Click the Font tab
   * Choose the font you want from the drop-down list
   * Click OK.

Dear Harold.

When I followed your directions with the document open, I found that the Default style already had the font I wanted, I should have already changed it for all new documents. So I just closed the Styles and Formatting dialog. The default, however, font of the document did not change, it remained like it was... I tried changing the Default style to a third font, and then back to the desired one, but that still had no effect on the document. Can you gather from this what is going on?

I also tried doing what you suggest after selecting the whole document with Ctrl+A, but again the Default style in the Styles and Formatting dialog showed as the new font, while in the document it still is the old one... Should I suppose that the style of the paragraphs of the document is not the Default style in the dialog? But then I checked the other styles, and did not find the font I want to change in the document.

I also tried starting a new paragraph in the document, and it used the document's old font, not the Default in the Styles and Formatting dialog.

The font of all text in the default paragraph style will change to the font you just chose. You can change other attributes such as font size or typeface in the same way.

I tend to think that the default font of the original WP document has not become the Default paragraph style of the OOWriter document... But then which style is it?

The concept of "styles" is key to OpenOffice, especially if you plan to write/edit longish documents with reasonably sophisticated formats. I recommend the chapters on styles in the Writer Guide at http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOoAuthors_User_Manual/Writer_Guide

Thanks. I have also been thinking that it would be a good idea to find a book on Open Office and read it through, like I once did with WP. Do you have a suggestion? I am not interested only in the Writer, but also in the Calc and the Draw... Or do you think I might as well postpone this until I get OO 3?

Thanks,

Eustace
