download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html is probably the most
useful link for you. Briefly, to install on Vista you double-click on
the file you downloaded, which starts the installation wizard. That
unpacks the downloaded file into an installation folder (generally on
your desktop) that you can discard after the installation is complete.
Your Start menu should then have a folder for OpenOffice.org, and you
can use the shortcuts there to start any of the parts of OOo. The main
choice you'll need to make is whether or not to have OOo as the default
application for opening files from Microsoft Office, but you can always
change the file associations later.
I'm using OOo on Vista Home Premium with no trouble.
