Better is you remember to remove the stateless property, when the VM is shutdown and before you make any change on the disk.

In case you can make a snapshot of the detached VM and then clone the snapshot into a new VM, change the property of this new VM removing the stateless flag and using it as your "new" version of the needed VM.
