Yes, the dependency on cyrus-sasl and openssl is optional and even if built in, you don't need to use it. I was only guessing that the lack of support might be the cause of the error you were seeing in the tests. (Since most people have authentication built in, its possible the test only works in that circumstance. That is however merely speculation on my part).
