Thanks for the link Charles. I went through this link earlier too and have
observed that all of the clustering aspects provided in this link are
possible by configuring 'activemq.xml' provided with servicemix 3.3.1
installation too. 
I got confused after reading
http://servicemix.apache.org/SMX4NMR/13-clustering.html where it lists
commands like 's...@root:/> activemq/create-broker' which I could not run
without Apache ActiveMQ installation. Now when I pasted the link here, I
observe this is for SMX 4 and NOT for SMX 3.3.1.

So, it seems like there is no need to install Apache ActiveMQ on top of SMX
3.3.1 for any clustering enhancements.

Please let me know if my understanding is right.
