With Ludovics help I got this sorted, it was what I suspected, the user was subscribed to their own folder. To fix;
sogo-tool backup /backup/folder/path/ userid Then edit the the resulting file and remove the username from the SubscribedFolders = () array. Then import just the settings for the user back with; sogo-tool restore -p /backup/folder/path/ userid Cheers!
