This sounds like a stupid question, but scouring the list archives
and docs I can't find it; how do I add contacts to the 'public'
address book that everyone has access to ? Its read only as a
default.

I should add when not using LDAP, but using SQL sources and using
vers 1.3.7 ?
You can't edit this via SOGo whether its LDAP or SQL. The best option is
to create a "general" user like Dominique says and share their contacts
and calendars to everyone.

Ok, thanks for this. But then the question is :- what is the purpose of the 'public' address book ?
