So if I read your message correctly if everything is set properly
then even in lightning we will get a popup notification on double
booking that will stop the user from double booking the resource at
all. Just in lightning the popup may not be the most informative. Is
this correct?

Could it be that I have not created the actual mailboxes for the
resources? I just tried to double book a car and when I did I got this
in the log when it tried to send the email...
